Shady Lawns

My lawn is partially covered by shade caused by an overhanging tree and it's also very dry. How can I keep the grass green?

  • The most important point to remember when shade is involved is that moisture must reach the affected areas.
  • Watering the area after reseeding will assist germination and help establish, but the area will still need regular attention.
  • It will help if any low overhanging branches are chopped back to enable the light and rain to penetrate further under the tree. Any hard soil will require rotovating, breaking down and leveling ready for seeding.
  • Our “Shady Place” Mixture is a blend of species tolerant of dry conditions, but to maintain growth it will need regular watering.
  • Another mixture that includes drought tolerant grasses and can be used on dry infertile soil is our “Grow Slow” mixture.
  • We advise that under trees the grass is let to grow longer (25mm); this allows any morning dew to collect on the longer blades of grass and helps feed the grass plants.
  • The soil temperature under trees will be less if the sunlight cannot reach the area involved, this may leave the grass plants weaker and some could die during our wet cold winters. To help improve the situation it may be necessary to overseed once or twice a year to maintain a healthy supply of grass plants.
  • Any well established trees will extract large amounts of moisture and goodness from the soil, it may be advisable when preparing the area for reseeding that a pre-seeding fertiliser (6-9-6) is applied while leveling the area out.
