Controlling Damage caused by Dogs

My female dog is continually causing patches on my lawn from its urine. Do you have a mixture that will control this problem?

  • Unfortunately there are no lawn seed mixtures available that are resistant to dog urine.
  • For a lawn that gets heavily used by dogs we would recommend our “Childs Play”,  or “Renovator” mixtures.
  • Repair the problem patches on a regular basis with a suitable mixture.
  • Rake out the dead grass and overseed with a mixture of seed and soil.
  • A regular supply of suitable fertilizer (at the correct times of year) will maintain a strong and healthy lawn.
  • A general overseed over the whole lawn during the Spring or Autumn will add new healthy grass plants.
  • After overseeding, rake/brush the seed into the lawn - this allows the seed to germinate in the soil and not lodge in the blades of grass.
  • If possible, water the lawn on a regular basis to help flush urine deposits away.
  • Create a small doggy area for use by your dogs, made up of gravel/bark together with a wooden pee post and train them to use on a regular basis.
  • You can add tomato juice to dog food which should reduce the acidity of the urine (a tablespoon of tomato juice for large dogs and dessert spoon for smaller dogs).
