Which Spreader is better for my purpose?

Which type of spreader you choose depends on the size and characteristics of the area you wish to cover.

For larger areas, it is often easier to use a broadcast spreader as they spread grass seeds and fertiliser across a wider area. This ultimately means less work for larger areas such as paddocks, roadside verges, lawns and gardens.

However, to avoid getting grass seed on patios and flowerbeds, a more accurate spreader is needed. A drop spreader is more accurate as grass seed or fertiliser falls between the wheels. This reduces the spread area which means more passes are required to cover the same area. This makes them ideal for small lawns or gardens with flowerbeds, patios or other obstacles to manoeuvre.

Drop Spreaders:

  • Spread grass seeds or fertiliser directly below the spreader hopper.
  • Precise drop application.
  • Ideal for smaller or irregular areas.
  • Easier to avoid contaminating ponds, borders or patios, etc.
  • Easier to calibrate accurately.
  • Only available in push models.

Broadcast Spreaders:

  • Spreads grass seeds or fertiliser by using a spinning disc.
  • Scatters seeds over an area.
  • Larger hoppers mean less refills.
  • Spread width is wider, allowing quicker coverage across larger areas.
  • Larger wheels travel better over uneven ground.
  • Available in handheld, push and towable models.
