How to use new lawn granular fertiliser

Incorporate this fertiliser into the soil as part of your final soil preparation before sowing your grass seed. Or you can apply it up to ten days after the grass seed has been sown.

How to Use Granular Lawn Fertiliser in general

  1. Check the weather
Apply on a dry, still day. Light rain afterwards is ideal.

  2. Measure your lawn
Know the square metres so you can buy and apply the correct amount.

  3. Choose your spreader
A rotary, drop, or handheld spreader all work well—handheld is perfect for small lawns.
Wear gloves while handling and applying the fertiliser.

  4. Apply evenly
Walk at a steady pace, spreading in straight lines. Avoid heavy overlaps or missed patches.

  5. Brush off hard surfaces immediately to avoid discolouration
Sweep any granules off patios, paths, or drains.

  6. Water it in
Water the lawn thoroughly after spreading or apply before expected rain to help the granules dissolve and move into the soil.

  7. Keep people and pets off the lawn
Ensure the granules have dissolved/been fully watered in before using the lawn, and wait until the grass is dry again after watering.

  8. Store properly
Keep the bag tightly sealed in a cool, dry place.

Maintenance
  • For maximum effect and to improve nutrient uptake from granular fertilisers, apply liquid seaweed every 2-3 weeks to improve soil biology and structure over time
  • For accurate and easy application we recommend using a spreader
FAQs

How to apply a new lawn lawn fertiliser?

It’s important to follow a few preparation steps when applying a new lawn fertiliser. The first step is to ensure your lawn is free from weeds and any other debris, then rake the top few inches of soil.

Once the soil is prepared, apply the fertiliser evenly - we recommend using a spreader for a more even application. Make sure to check the specific application rate for the product you choose.

Once you have applied the fertiliser, water it thoroughly in to the ground so that the nutrients dissolve into the soil.

We also recommend watering your lawn for a couple of days before sowing seed, especially if the weather is warm.

What is new lawn fertiliser?

Pre-seeding new lawn starter fertiliser is specially formulated to be applied to your lawn before sowing grass seed, or in the two weeks after you have sowed new seed.

New lawn fertiliser provides essential nutrients to the soil, so that when the grass seed is sown, it develops stronger roots and grows quickly. This gives your lawn the best possible start, helping you achieve a healthy, lush lawn.

Should I fertilise my lawn before seeding?

Yes, it is recommended that you fertilise your lawn before seeding, especially if you are trying to achieve a beautiful, lush, healthy lawn.

Grass seed needs nutrients to grow, and a pre-seeding lawn fertiliser provides the essential elements for the seed to germinate, establish and grow.

It is important to use a specialist lawn fertilsier for new lawns, such as this product, rather than a regular seasonal fertiliser.

When to apply fertiliser to new lawns?

It is possible to use granular lawn fertiliser when seeding a new lawn but the type of fertiliser and timing matters:

  • Use this pre-seeding lawn fertiliser if you want to fertilise before sowing.
  • Spring/Summer and Autumn/Winter fertilisers can also be used before sowing as long as they are fully watered in first and then wait 7 days before sowing new seed
  • Fertilisers containing weedkiller or moss killer must be fully watered in, and left for 2 weeks before sowing. This gives time for the treatment to work

To apply fertiliser after sowing:

  • Granular fertiliser: Wait 12 weeks before applying. Newly germinated grass is sensitive and can scorch easily
  • Liquid fertiliser: A gentle liquid feed can be used after 4 weeks, once the grass has rooted and is actively growing

Granular lawn fertiliser and pets

Should I keep pets off the lawn?

Keep people and pets off the lawn until the granules have fully dissolved and the lawn has dried after watering or rain.

This normally takes 3–5 days, depending on weather.

Always follow the safety guidance on the product label.

If possible, treat the lawn in sections, keeping one part unfertilised so pets have an area they can continue to use. This protects your lawn and avoids disturbing the fertiliser while it dissolves.

Always follow product labels

Application rates, safety information, and specific instructions vary between products, so always refer to the product label for the correct guidance.

Will granular lawn fertiliser affect my plants?

Granular lawn fertilisers are designed specifically for grass.
Avoid spreading them into flowerbeds or borders—some formulations may be too strong for ornamental plants.

If a lot of granular fertiliser gets onto plants by accident you should:

  • Brush or shake off the granules so they aren’t sitting on the leaves or soil surface.
  • Water the area thoroughly to dilute any residue and wash nutrients into the soil.
  • Monitor the plants over the next few days. Most established plants will be fine once the fertiliser is diluted.
