Wildflower Bulbs (Autumn Planted) FAQs

What are autumn planted wildflower bulbs?

Autumn planted bulbs are as the name suggests planted in Autumn and then bloom the following Spring. Wildflower bulbs require a cold winter dormant period in order to establish their roots. They are a great option for adding some beautiful colour to your garden in early Spring.

When should I plant autumn wildflower bulbs?

The best time to plant autumn planted wildflower bulbs is during the months of September to November before the ground freezes.

How long do autumn-planted wildflower bulbs take to flower?

Depending on the specific type of wildflower bulbs you plant will determine its flowering season. However, autumn planted wildflower bulbs will bloom a few months after planting, typically between January and May. Choosing a variety of species is a great way to expand the flowering season of your garden.

If you’ve missed the autumn planting window, you can choose ‘In the green’ wildflower bulbs which can be planted in January and bloom within a few weeks.

How do I plant autumn-planted wildflower bulbs?

Plant the wildflower bulbs in between September and November, make sure the ground isn’t frozen and is well aerated. Plant the bulbs around 2-3 times their depth (around 10cm deep) with the pointed end up. Space them around 5-10cm apart in a scattered approach for a more natural look. Once planted, make sure the soil is firm and then water well.

How do I care for autumn-planted wildflower bulbs after planting?

After planting the wildflower bulbs ensure they are watered well and then they can usually be left alone through winter, requiring little maintenance. Once they have bloomed, allowing any foliage to naturally die back can help fuel next year’s growth.
