Wildflower Bulbs FAQs

Why plant wildflower bulbs?

When you think of springtime, are flowers the first thing that come to mind? We hope so! Native british wildflowers like daffodils, bluebells and snowdrops well and truly let the world know that spring has sprung as they awake from their wintery slumber. And with summer just around the corner, we think there's no better way to invite the sunshine into your garden or woodland than with a sea of bright blues, warm yellows and pure whites.

When you want to establish a springtime garden, wildflower bulbs are the go-to choice. Perfect for autumn planting, they give you the chance to brighten up your outdoor space from as early as January, year after year. We also offer wildflower bulbs 'in the green', too. This means if you don't fancy planting in autumn, you can pre-order your bulbs in winter for delivery in the spring - all ready to be planted just as they're about to flourish.

What is the difference between dry bulbs and bulbs in the green?

Autumn planted "dry" bulbs (sometimes called dormant bulbs) are usually planted in autumn and are sold when the plant is not actively growing. They have no visible leaves or shoots. After planting, they establish roots first and then grow foliage and flowers when conditions are right.

Bulbs in the green are lifted and sold while they are actively growing, with leaves already visible above the soil. They are typically available in spring and give quicker, more reliable flowering because the plant has already started its growth cycle. This makes bulbs in the green ideal for filling gaps or creating instant impact in the garden.

When to plant wildflower bulbs?

Dry bulbs, available to order from July should be planted in the autumn. For more information, read our guide on how to plant wildflower bulbs.

Bulbs in the green should be planted from January. For more information, read our guide about wildflower bulbs in the green.

How long do wildflower bulbs take to grow?

Wildflower bulbs flower from January to May, depending on the species. This means that autumn planted wildflower bulbs can take a few months to flower from planting, but spring planted bulbs in the green can flower in a matter of weeks!

Should I plant wildflower bulbs in a meadow?

Adding wildflower bulbs to your meadow is a great choice to create a beautiful, vibrant, diverse meadow with a longer flower period, particularly in early spring.

Planting wildflower bulbs and sowing wildflower seeds will help create a greater diversity in your meadow, while also extending the bloom time of your wildflower garden.
