Agricultural Grass Seed FAQs
What is the best agricultural grass seed for grazing?
The best type of grass seed for grazing will depend on your livestock, but most grass seed mixtures for grazing will contain perennial ryegrass, specifically with late heading diploid varieties or high-sugar grass mixes for cattle grazing.
What is the best agricultural grass seed for silage?
The best agricultural grass seed for silage is typically a high-sugar perennial ryegrass or hybrid ryegrass, as these varieties offer excellent yield, digestibility and forage quality for livestock. For a short-term silage ley (1–3 years), high-sugar hybrid or perennial ryegrass mixtures are a popular choice. For a long-term silage grass seed mixture (3+ years), a blend containing both tetraploid and diploid perennial ryegrass varieties can provide high silage yields, improved feed value and greater sward persistence

When is the best time to sow agricultural grass seed?
Typically, late summer or early autumn is a good time to sow agricultural grass seed, when the soil is warm and there is enough rainfall. If you are wanting to sow agricultural grass seed in the spring, then April to May is the best time.
How much agricultural grass seed do I need per acre?
The amount of agricultural grass seed per acre depends on the grass seed mixture and its intended use. For most grazing, silage and hay grass seed mixtures, the recommended sowing rate is typically 14–16kg per acre, with 15kg per acre being a common target rate. For overseeding grassland, a lower rate of around 8–12kg per acre is usually recommended, depending on sward density and establishment conditions. Always check the suggested sowing rate for your specific agricultural grass seed mixture to achieve the best establishment and yield
Can I overseed an existing pasture with agricultural grass seed?
Yes, overseeding an existing pasture is a great, quick, easy and cost-effective way to improve the quality of an area. It can be used to give the area a nutrient boost while helping increase yield. The best time to do this would be later March or after it's been cut, September onwards. Ensure that the existing sward is cut or grazed short prior to overseeding to allow for any new seed to have good contact with the soil to aid establishment.
How long does agricultural grass seed take to germinate?
Once sown, agricultural grass seed usually takes between 7-21 days to germinate. It will depend on the specific mixture and the growing conditions.
