Why Choose Wood Anemones in the Green?
Wood anemones are supplied “in the green” - although they don’t show visible greenery at this stage. Instead, you’ll receive living rhizomes with fine roots and small emerging shoots. Unlike traditional bulbs, wood anemones grow from slender rhizomes that should be planted horizontally just below the soil surface.
Here’s why gardeners love this method:
- Fresh and full of life – lifted and dispatched while still viable, their rhizomes are firm and ready to establish in their new home.
- Better establishment – planting during active growth allows the rhizomes to settle quickly and begin forming strong roots.
- Natural woodland planting – wood anemones are ideal for shady borders, under trees, and in woodland-style gardens where they will gradually spread into beautiful drifts.
- Simple planting method – lay the rhizomes horizontally, just beneath the soil surface, and cover lightly. They don’t need to be planted deeply like traditional bulbs.
- Early nectar source – their delicate blooms provide valuable early-season pollen for emerging pollinators.
Wood anemones are a timeless woodland favourite, and planting them "in the green" is the most reliable way to establish these charming spring flowers successfully.
How to Plant Wood Anemone Rhizomes 'In The Green'
What to Expect — Bulbs “in the green” are supplied with roots already formed. Wood Anemone don’t show visible greenery at this stage. Instead, you’ll receive living rhizomes with fine roots and small emerging shoots.
Handle gently — Bulbs “in the green” are living plants rather than dry bulbs, so treat them with care.
- Prepare your site first – Choose a spot with moist but well-drained soil. Loosen the ground and remove weeds before your bulbs arrive.
- Soak in water - Rhizomes will benefit from being soaked in water for a few hours before planting.
- Planting – lay the rhizomes horizontally, just beneath the soil surface, and cover lightly. They don’t need to be planted deeply like traditional bulbs.
- Water after planting – Water thoroughly to settle the soil and remove air pockets. Keep the area moist for the first few weeks while the bulbs establish.
Aftercare and Dividing
- Once they’ve flowered, leave the foliage to die back naturally. The leaves are vital for photosynthesis, helping the bulbs store energy for next year’s display.
