Crocuses: How to grow them (and why!)

No early springtime display is complete without crocuses. These goblet-shaped blooms come in a wide variety of palettes, which make it quite the versatile little flower to add an extra drop of flavour to a flower bed.

Fun Facts

Greek mythology has a variety of potential origins for crocuses: one story focuses on a Grecian man of the same name who was transformed into the flower by the gods, either as a gift for his love and devotion (in the same tale, his love Smilax is turned into bindweed, and their flowery forms allow them to stay together for eternity)… or as a punishment for his disloyalty in love. Another story suggests that Crocus the man was a friend of the god Hermes, who transformed the former’s body into the flower after his death. Although in spite of these bittersweet tales, crocuses have very positive, happy connotations as well - in the language of flowers, they’re considered a symbol of cheerfulness and glee!

How to grow

Plant crocuses 6-8 weeks before the first hard frost, in a place that gets plenty of sun - about 10cm and 7.5cm apart. As a short, colourful flower, they make an excellent addition to beds, but they can also be used as a carpet flower (though their leaves must die down before mowing; they’re best planted in clusters where they won’t get in the way).

Species & Styles

There are a large variety of crocuses to plant depending on your preferences for palettes and blooming times: Romance is among the first to bloom with pale, creamy-yellow petals and another early bloomer, Whitewell Purple is a striking shade of purple. Yalta is one of our favourites and a true garden classic with distinctive stripes in white and purple.
