Sowing & Establishment

How to Sow Wildflower Seeds

Preparation

  • Wildflower Seeds perform best in poor, low nutrient soils, which haven’t been heavily fertilised in the past.If possible, remove any rich topsoil to create leaner growing conditions (High nutrient soils encourage weeds and fast growing grasses which may outcompete the wildflowers in this mixture)
  • Clear the area of weeds, grass, and debris before starting
  • If weeds have taken over, it’s best to reduce the number of weed seeds in the soil first. You can do this by allowing a flush of weeds to germinate, then removing them before sowing your wildflowers
  • Cultivate the ground to a depth of 10cm to relieve compaction and create a fine level tilth
  • Work the soil until it reaches a fine, crumbly texture
  • Try to disturb it as little as possible afterwards, as this can bring new weed seeds to the surface

Timing

  • The best times to sow wildflower seed are from February to April or from late August through October, with autumn usually giving the best results.
  • Avoid sowing in the hot, dry summer months.

Sowing

  • To achieve an even spread, mix the seed with a carrier such as dry sand at a ratio of four parts sand to one part seed (by weight). This makes it easier to achieve an even distribution and also provides a visual marker, making it easier to see any missed patches and avoid seeding areas twice
  • Use around 3g per m² for pure wildflower mixes, or 5g per m² for mixes that include grasses
  • If you are sowing a seed mixture - regularly mix/shake the seed, as seeds will naturally separate due to variations in size and weight
  • Once sown, ensure good ‘seed to soil’ contact by lightly raking or rolling the area

Reducing the sowing rate is likely to result in invasion from weed species.

Increasing the sowing rate generally leads to reduced diversity as the more aggressive species will outcompete slower growing plants.

Flowering

  • Dpending on the time of year and current weather condisions, you should start to see seedlings emerge within a few weeks
  • In mixed sowings, grasses may appear first, but this is perfectly normal and not a cause for concern
  • Annual wildflowers will typically bloom in the same year if sown in spring or the previous autumn
  • Perennial species take longer to establish, generally flowering from their second year onwards

How to Use Granular Lawn Fertiliser

  1. Check the weather
Apply on a dry, still day. Light rain afterwards is ideal.

  2. Measure your lawn
Know the square metres so you can buy and apply the correct amount.

  3. Choose your spreader
A rotary, drop, or handheld spreader all work well—handheld is perfect for small lawns.
Wear gloves while handling and applying the fertiliser.

  4. Apply evenly
Walk at a steady pace, spreading in straight lines. Avoid heavy overlaps or missed patches.

  5. Brush off hard surfaces immediately to avoid discolouration
Sweep any granules off patios, paths, or drains.

  6. Water it in
Water the lawn thoroughly after spreading or apply before expected rain to help the granules dissolve and move into the soil.

  7. Keep people and pets off the lawn
Ensure the granules have dissolved/been fully watered in before using the lawn, and wait until the grass is dry again after watering.

  8. Store properly
Keep the bag tightly sealed in a cool, dry place.

Always follow product labels

Application rates, safety information, and specific instructions vary between products, so always refer to the product label for the correct guidance.

Use

How to use a handheld spreader to spread seed?

  • To ensure even distribution, fill the spreader with the lawn seed, wildflower seed or granular fertiliser of your choice
  • Make sure to not overfill it
  • Set the settings to the appropriate coverage according to the instruction leaflet enclosed
  • Walk over the area with a constant, slow speed to evenly distribute the seed. When walking, press the trigger to open the dispensing hole and turn the handle to ensure the seed flows through the hole consistently.
  • After every use, give it a thorough cleaning
  • Keep in a dry, cool environment

When using with wildflower seeds, ensure you mix 1 part wildflower seed with 4 parts sharp sand to ensure even application - continue to mix/shake thoroughly throughout sowing.

FAQ

What are the benefits of using a handheld spreader?

Handheld spreaders are great for spreading wildflower and grass seed evenly. Not only does a handheld spreader speed up the task it does ensure a more even coverage which creates a better looking garden or wildflower meadow.

Are hand seed spreaders worth it?

Hand seed spreads can be used for a number of different applications, including grass seed, wildflower seed and fertiliser. They are a great choice if you are wanting an even, great looking lawn or wildflower meadow.

Can you just scatter seed by hand?

Yes, even though a seed spreader makes it easier and often ensures a more even distribution, you can scatter seed by hand. Make sure to walk slowly and ensure you scatter the seed evenly over the area you are seeding.
