Sowing Instructions

Preparation

  • Clear the area of weeds, grass, and debris before starting.
  • If weeds have taken over, it’s best to reduce the number of weed seeds in the soil first. You can do this by allowing a flush of weeds to germinate, then removing them before sowing your flower seeds.
  • Work the soil until it reaches a fine, crumbly texture. Try to disturb it as little as possible afterwards, as this can bring new weed seeds to the surface.

Timing

  • The best times to sow our range of ColourMax Seeds are from March to June when the soil is warm and moist.

Sowing

  • To achieve an even spread, mix the seed with a carrier such as dry sand before sowing.
  • For a good, varied display, sow the seed at 3g per m².
  • Lightly rake/roll/tread over the area once the seed has sown, to ensure light incorporation into the soil, without burying too deep.

Flowering

  • Within a few weeks, you should start to see seedlings emerging.
  • Flowers will typically bloom around three months from sowing (conditions allowing).
  • Annual mixtures will only flower for one year, for repeat flowering, re-sow the following Spring.

Summer wildflower seeds for bees

Planting summer blooming wildflowers for bees is a great way to help support ecosystems but it helps add a beautiful pop of colour to your outdoor space.

In our ColourMax 7 Annual Summer Bee Flower Seed mixture,, 100% of the flower species included are recognised by the Royal Horticultural Society as supporting many of the 1500 species of pollinating insects across the UK, including bees.

When should I plant summer wildflower seed?

When sowing annual summer wildflower seeds, we recommend planting them in early Spring, usually March - May time. This gives the wildflowers enough time to establish themselves ready to bloom in Summer.  They can also be planted in November to then bloom the following year.

What are annual summer wildflower seeds?

Annual summer wildflower seeds are seeds that are usually sowed in Spring, bloom in the first Summer season and then die in the Winter. They tend to have their whole lifecycle within 12-months. However, in some cases they may produce seeds which can grow into new plants the following season.
