What is granular lawn fertiliser?
Granular lawn fertiliser comes in small particles, or granules, that are spread on a lawn and provide nutrients through the roots. If rainfall is not imminent, it is best to water after application to help the fertiliser be absorbed. They are one of the most common types of lawn fertiliser due to their ease of application and their effectiveness.

We recommend fertilising your lawn in spring and summer, every 6-8 weeks.. Fertilising your lawn in spring helps it recover from the winter by promoting growth, while fertilising your lawn in the summer helps maintain growth and maintain a strong lawn to withstand summer heat and potential drought.
When to fertilise a lawn in spring?
If you are fertilising a lawn in spring, the recommended time to fertilise is during the months of March - May. When you begin to start mowing your grass regularly is usually when you should apply fertiliser.
Can I fertilise my lawn in summer?
Yes, but it is important to consider the current weather conditions as applying fertiliser in sunny, hot and dry areas can cause the grass to burn. Water in after applying if there is no rain in the forecast.
How to choose the right lawn fertiliser for spring and summer?
When fertilising your lawn during spring and summer, we recommend choosing a lawn fertiliser that has a high nitrogen content. Nitrogen encourages your lawn to quickly grow strong and healthy grass. Choosing a slow release one is perfect for keeping nutrients up while it is growing.
When should I sow grass seed?
You can sow grass seed once the fertiliser has fully dissolved and been watered in. This ensures the nutrients are in the soil and won’t scorch the seed.
Can I put fertiliser on my newly seeded lawn?
Before sowing new grass seed:
- Use a pre-seeding new lawn fertiliser if you want to fertilise before sowing.
- Spring/Summer and Autumn/Winter fertilisers can also be used before sowing as long as they are fully watered in first. We recommend waiting around 7 days for the granular lawn fertiliser to be absorbed
- Fertilisers containing weedkiller or moss killer must be:
- fully watered in and left for 2 weeks before sowing
- This gives time for the treatment to work. After the weeds or moss die back, scarify and clear debris before sowing
After sowing new grass seed:
- Granular fertiliser: Wait 12 weeks before applying. Newly germinated grass is sensitive and can scorch easily
- Liquid fertiliser: A gentle liquid feed can be used after 4 weeks, once the grass has rooted and is actively growing
Granular lawn fertiliser, pets & plants
Keep pets off the lawn until the granules have fully dissolved and the lawn has dried after watering or rain. This normally takes 3–5 days, depending on weather. Always follow the safety guidance on the product label.
How can I keep my pets off the lawn? If possible, treat the lawn in sections, keeping one part unfertilised so pets have an area they can continue to use. This protects your lawn and avoids disturbing the fertiliser while it dissolves.
Will granular lawn fertiliser affect my plants? Granular lawn fertilisers are designed specifically for grass.
Avoid spreading them into flowerbeds or borders—some formulations may be too strong for ornamental plants.
If a lot of granular fertiliser gets onto plants by accident you should:
- Brush or shake off the granules so they aren’t sitting on the leaves or soil surface.
- Water the area thoroughly to dilute any residue and wash nutrients into the soil.
- Monitor the plants over the next few days. Most established plants will be fine once the fertiliser is diluted.
