How Much Grass Seed Do I Need?

The amount of grass seed you need for your lawn will depend on the size of your lawn and whether you're sowing a new lawn or overseeding an existing one.

As a general guide, most grass seed mixtures require between 35-50g per m² for a new lawn and 20-35g per m² for overseeding or lawn repair.

To calculate the quantity required, simply measure your lawn area in square metres (m²) and check the recommended sowing rate on the product page.

Different grass seed mixtures can vary depending on their intended use.

At Boston Seeds, our grass seed is available in 2kg, 5kg, 10kg and 20kg bags, making it easy to find the right quantity for everything from small patch repairs to large landscaping projects.

Each product page includes coverage information to help you choose the most suitable pack size for your lawn.

How long does lawn seed take to grow?

In ideal conditions, most lawn seeds will grow within 8-10 days after sowing. It will usually take 6-8 weeks for it to be fully grown. At Boston Seeds, we have a wide range of lawn seeds, some with fast-growing properties. Take a look at our range above to find your perfect lawn seed.

How to prepare a lawn for lawn seed?

Before sowing the grass seed, it’s essential to prepare your existing lawn or area to ensure optimal growth and establishment. This involves several steps to create the best environment for your new lawn.

  1. To prepare your sowing site, start by removing any debris, rocks, and weeds from the area. If you have existing lawns, consider scarifying or aerating the soil to loosen it and remove any dead grass or debris. If you’re starting from scratch, till the soil to a depth of about 20cm (8in) to loosen and aerate it.
  2. Level the ground to ensure it’s even and smooth. You can use a rake or a leveling tool to achieve this. If your soil is heavy clay or sandy, consider adding organic matter like compost or well-rotted manure to improve its structure and fertility.
  3. Finally, firm the soil by treading the area several times in different directions. This will help to settle the soil and create a stable base for your new lawn.

How to sow your new lawn seed?

To get the best even sow, we recommend you sow your grass seed following the below steps:

  1. Start by weighing out the correct quantity of seeds for the size of your new lawn.
  2. Divide the seed into two equal batches, and sow half the seeds over the whole area by walking up and down in parallel rows.
  3. Repeat the process with the second batch of seeds, walking from side to side.Use a spreader or a broadcast seeder to distribute the seeds evenly, or simply scatter them by hand.
  4. Lightly rake over the sown area to cover the majority of the seeds with soil.
  5. Water gently with a light spray if no rain is forecast for a few days.

How to look after your new lawn?

After sowing your lawn seed, it’s essential to provide the right conditions to help your seed grow and establish itself. Begin by keeping the soil moist, but not waterlogged, this encourages grass seedlings to germinate and grow strong roots. Water lightly and frequently, especially during dry spells, to maintain the necessary moisture levels.

While your new lawn is growing, we recommend protecting it from heavy foot traffic and pets to prevent damage to the delicate grass seedlings. If possible, set up barriers or temporary fencing to keep the area undisturbed.

Once the grass reaches about 5-7cm (2-3 inches) in height, you can start mowing. Make sure to set your mower blades high to avoid cutting the grass too short, which can stress the young plants.

Applying a suitable lawn fertiliser can also help provide essential nutrients to support healthy growth. Choose a fertiliser specifically designed for new lawns and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for application rates and timing.

When is the best time to sow lawn seed?

The best time to sow lawn seed depends on the climate and region you’re in. By choosing the right time to sow your grass seed, you can ensure a lush, healthy lawn that thrives throughout the year.

In general, the best time to sow grass seed is in early autumn (September-November) and mid-spring (March-April). These periods offer ideal conditions for grass seed germination, with moderate temperatures and consistent moisture levels.

Sowing grass seed in early autumn allows the grass to establish before the winter cold sets in, while mid-spring sowing takes advantage of warming temperatures and increased daylight. Avoid sowing grass seed during the peak of summer or winter, as extreme temperatures and weather conditions can hinder germination and growth.
