How to use Clover Grass Seed – Growing a Lush, Eco-friendly Lawn

Clover grass seed is gaining popularity among homeowners and gardeners looking for an alternative to traditional lawn cover. Whether you want a low-maintenance area, an eco-friendly ground cover, or a pollinator-friendly space, clover grass is a fantastic option.

BS Eco-Clover Grass Seed

Our BS Eco-Clover Grass Seed Clover is an eco-friendly blend of lawn seed and microclover,  a smaller-leafed variety of white clover which is the only type suitable for use in lawns. Microclover creates a dense, uniform lawn, and provides nitrogen which reduces the need for fertiliser. The BS Eco-Clover Grass Seed gives a hardwearing lawn, dark green in colour which, if left to grow longer, will be beneficial to bees and other pollinators.

Benefits of Sowing Clover Grass Seed

Clover lawns offer numerous advantages over traditional turfgrass:

•    Low maintenance – clover requires less mowing than grass, as it grows slowly and remains shorter.

•    Drought resistant – unlike conventional grass, clover stays green during dry periods without needing constant watering.

•    Natural fertiliser – clover is a legume that fixes nitrogen in the soil, reducing the need for chemical fertilisers.

•    Weed suppression – a dense clover lawn outcompetes weeds, minimising the need for herbicides.

•    Soft and lush – clover creates a thick, cushioned lawn that's comfortable for barefoot walking.

•    Pollinator-friendly – bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects thrive on clover flowers, promoting biodiversity.

•    No need for pesticides – unlike grass, clover is naturally resistant to many lawn pests.

How to Grow Clover Grass

Growing clover is easy and requires minimal effort compared to traditional lawns. Here’s how to do it:

Choose the right clover seed - select the variety that best suits your needs. For a traditional lawn alternative, white clover or microclover is ideal. If you want a wildflower meadow effect, red clover is a good choice. You can also mix clover with grass seed for a balanced lawn. At Boston Seeds, our BS Eco-Clover Grass Seed is a mix of perennial ryegrass, two varieties of fescue, plus microclover and is the ideal solution for creating a good-looking and durable lawn or landscape.

Prepare the soil - clover thrives in well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil (pH 6.0-7.0). Before sowing remove weeds and debris, and loosen the top 2-3 inches of soil using a rake or tiller. If needed, add compost or organic matter to improve soil fertility.

Plant the seeds - for best results, sow clover in early spring or late summer when temperatures are mild. Scatter the seeds evenly over the soil by hand or with a lawn spreader, mixing with sand or sawdust to help distribute seeds more evenly. Press the seeds into the soil lightly using a roller or by walking over the area. Clover seeds need contact with the soil but shouldn’t be buried deeply.

Watering and germination - clover seeds require consistent moisture to germinate. Water lightly once or twice a day until you see sprouts, typically within 7-14 days. After establishment, clover needs little to no watering unless there is a drought.

Maintenance - clover lawns require very little upkeep but can be mowed, if desired, every 3-4 weeks to maintain a tidy appearance. Keep the height at 3 inches or higher to support healthy growth. No fertilisers are necessary as clover naturally enriches soil and, as a natural weed suppressant, it needs no weed control; if weeds do appear, you can pull them by hand or apply a spot treatment such as Weedol Lawn Weedkiller - Ready To Use.

Clover grass seed is an excellent alternative to traditional lawns, offering a beautiful, low-maintenance, and eco-friendly solution for homeowners and landscapers. With its ability to fix nitrogen, resist drought, and support pollinators, clover is a smart choice for anyone looking to reduce care efforts while promoting a healthier environment. Whether you grow a full clover area or mix it with grass, you'll enjoy a lush, green landscape with minimal effort.
