Freesia: Advice On How To Grow Them (And Why!)
Producing sprays of fragrant, funnel-shaped flowers, they are not only a favourite with florists, but they also look fantastic in borders. Adding late summer colour when most other bulbs have died back, their vivid colours are a welcome addition to any garden or patio display. Alongside their unique fragrance, they are a cottage garden favourite.
Fun Facts
Freesias get their name from the German botanist and medical practitioner Friedrich Freese. They are a native species to the eastern side of Southern Africa, with most species being found in the Cape provinces.
How to grow
Freesias can grow up to around 45cm tall and are susceptible to wind, so it is advisable to support them with canes or sticks if they are in an open area.
Plant 5cm deep and space 7cm apart with the tip facing up. Preferring well-drained soils, they also prefer not to be too dry during the growing season, so ensure they get plenty of water for the best blooms.
