Hyacinths: How to grow them (and why!)

Hyacinths are a popular choice for bulbs, and there’s plenty of reasons why! Some are drawn to its charming spikes of flowers, growing in a beautiful bell shape and a variety of soft colours. Then there’s its distinctive and sweet scent, which makes them an ideal indoor-blooming flower- in fact, some hyacinth bulbs are prepared specifically for this purpose, and can even brighten up a house in the winter months! All in all, it’s a highly versatile flower for every occasion.

Fun Facts

I’ve been obsessed with flower symbolism lately - especially with how they’re used in fiction. In this case, you may expect to see purple hyacinths in particularly mopey scenes: they’re typically seen as a symbol of sorrow or regret. This likely comes from Greek mythology, where many potential stories of the flower’s origin have involve a man named Hyacinth being killed by accident by the gods in an attempt to win his friendship. On a happier note, many other colours of hyacinth have meanings that are much more hopeful: Ostensibly, the flower relates to feelings of sincerity; white hyacinths represent a prayer and a red hyacinth symbolises playfulness and flirtation.

How to Grow

In this case, how you grow hyacinths is largely dependant on where it is you want to grow them. Outside, bulbs should be planted in early Autumn; 10cm (4 inches) deep and 7.5cm (3 inches) apart. Hyacinths thrive in full sunlight and with well-drained soil, so they should be fine as long as you don’t overwater them- if you have them in a container, it’s recommended you use bricks or similar items to give them breathing space and ensure they don’t become too waterlogged. Indoor displays, on the other hand, require special ‘prepared’ bulbs. These bulbs typically require planting in September, and they’ll hopefully bloom in time for Christmas!

Before you buy, just be aware that handling hyacinths can sometimes lead to skin irritation- try to handle them with gloves where you can.

Species & Styles

There are many different colours of hyacinth available. Many bloom in a standard pastel palette, but two species that break the mould in this regard are the ‘Gypsy Queen’, which has peculiar and pleasing peach-coloured blooms, and the rich, near-black ‘Midnight Mystic’. Another one that’s particularly nice is the ‘Woodstock’- unlike other hyacinth’s shades of cool bluish-lilac, Woodstock bears rich plum purple petals.

As strongly-scented flowers, hyacinths are perfect flowers for pollinators, but also excellent for planting at the forefront of your garden where their delightful aroma can be best appreciated!
