Anemone: Advice On How To Grow Them (And Why!)

Anemone. Ah-NEM-oh-nee. Its name is famously tongue-twisty, but once you get the hang of it, it’s a very pretty word. How fitting for a very pretty flower; it grows in a cup or a daisy-like formation, with a dark centre and a variation of brightly coloured petals, from vivid violet, rich red, or even pale and peachy. There’s something for everyone with this sublime species!

Fun Facts

Anemones are closely associated with the wind; their name even means “wind-flower” or “the wind’s daughter” in Greek. Greek mythology ties the flower to the goddess Aphrodite - supposedly the flowers sprouted from her tears as she mourned her lost love, Adonis. These tales likely contribute to the flower’s rather conflicting multiple meanings - being seen both as a sign of a coming spring breeze or the loss of a loved one. Wild anemones are a common sight in graveyards.

How to grow

Plant in small and relatively shallow clusters with only 1 or 2 inches between each bulb and from the surface.

Anemones require a decent amount of sunlight and a decent amount of watering in well-drained soil. Taller varieties should receive wind protection.

Species & Styles

Anemones have so many variations in shape and colour that they could easily dress a garden all by themselves, and blend in with practically any prepared palette!

De Caen anemones are a well-known mix of cultivars, from the vibrant ‘Hollandia’ to the rich and dark ‘Bordeaux’; choose our Mixed De Caen to compliment or contrast a bright springtime garden!
