Why Wildflower Bulbs

Why Plant Wildflower Bulbs?

Wildflower bulbs are one of the simplest and most rewarding ways to bring colour, life, and wildlife into your garden. From the delicate Snake’s Head Fritillary in early spring to striking summer Alliums, these bulbs provide an ever-changing display that also benefits bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. If you’re aiming for a garden that feels natural yet full of impact, wildflower bulbs are an excellent choice.

This guide explains the main reasons to grow wildflower bulbs and offers advice on how to plant them for long-term success.

  • Effortless, long-lasting colour – Once they’re established, most wildflower bulbs need minimal care. They’ll reappear year after year and often multiply naturally.
  • Pollinator friendly – Species like fritillaries, crocus, and alliums are rich in nectar, offering valuable food sources for bees and butterflies at key times of year.
  • A natural look and feel – Wildflower bulbs suit meadows, lawns, and woodland edges beautifully, giving a relaxed, informal appearance compared with traditional bedding plants.
  • Extended flowering season – By combining bulbs that bloom across spring, summer, and autumn, you can enjoy colour and interest in the garden for many months.
  • Good for the environment – Wildflower bulbs promote biodiversity, attract pollinators, and thrive without heavy use of fertilisers or chemicals.

Explore our selection of wildflower bulbs and start building a garden that comes back brighter and more wildlife-friendly every season.

Planting & Care

When to Plant Wildflower Bulbs

Timing depends on the type of bulb you’re planting. Most spring-flowering species such as fritillaries, daffodils, crocus, and tulips should be planted in autumn, ideally from September to November, before the ground becomes too hard or cold.

How to Plant Wildflower Bulbs: Step by Step

1. Pick the right location
Wildflower bulbs thrive in sunny or lightly shaded areas with free-draining soil. Woodland species, such as bluebells, prefer dappled shade under trees or shrubs.

2. Prepare the soil
Remove weeds and loosen the surface. In grassy areas or meadows, lift small sections of turf, tuck the bulbs underneath, and replace the turf for a natural finish.

3. Plant at the correct depth
A good rule of thumb is to plant bulbs about three times as deep as their height. Always position them with the pointed tip facing upward and the roots downward.

4. Space naturally
Rather than neat rows, scatter bulbs by hand for a relaxed, natural look. Planting in small clumps of 5–10 bulbs creates a more authentic wildflower effect.

5. Cover and water
Gently replace the soil or turf, firm it down lightly, and water well to help the bulbs settle in.

Aftercare

Wildflower bulbs are easy to maintain once planted. Allow the leaves to die back naturally after flowering — this returns nutrients to the bulb for the next season. If planting in grass, delay mowing until the foliage has fully faded to give the bulbs time to store energy.
