Daffodils and Narcissi: How to grow them (and why!)
What’s spring without a little sunshine? …Well, come to think of it, it’s not very common to get sunshine at the very beginning of an English spring. But at the very least, planting sunny and vibrant flowers which bloom early help to cheer us up as the world thaws, and gets us excited for the sunshine to come; for this purpose, look no further than the gold-petalled daffodil!
Those particularly interested in daffodils should also look here; for now, we’ll be focusing on dwarf daffodils, for those looking for a smaller splash of colour, or those who just want something small to put at the front or edge of a border.
Fun Facts
As a fairly famous flower, Daffodils have popped up all over the place in mythology, fiction and poems; perhaps the most famous of these is from English Romantic poet William Wordsworth. Actually, the entire Wordsworth family contributed to the famous poem: William was walking with his sister Dorothy in the Lake District as they noticed the drift of daffodils which inspired the poem, and it was his wife Mary who contributed his two favourite lines in the poem, noting how the glowing beauty of daffodils “flash upon that inward eye.”
How to grow
Caring for daffodils is easy as pie! Simply plant them in autumn, in full sunlight with well-drained soil; some are known to tolerate partial shade, too. Even aesthetically, daffodils work just about any way you want: dwarf daffodils in particular are an excellent choice for beds and borders as they draw the attention of passers-by, and look particularly stunning at the front of a rockery display. They even make excellent dressing for a shrub or hedge, provided that they still get at least 6 hours of sunlight a day.
Dwarf daffodil & narcissi need to be planted at a depth 3 times their height and around 10cm apart. If they are planted too shallow then it can affect their growth and they may not flower at all.
Species & Styles
Martinette is a variety of dwarf daffodil with a particularly sweet scent, buttery yellow flowers and golden-orange trumpets that are exactly what you’d want from a daffodil! Meanwhile, there are other variations that cater to different palettes, such as Elka, which grows with pure, pristine beauty in its creamy-white petals.
