Lawn Fertiliser FAQs
When should I fertilise my lawn?
At Boston Seeds, we recommend applying a granular fertiliser every 6-8 weeks to give your lawn all of the base nutrients required for healthy grass. The most important applications are spring, around March/April time and then again in the autumn, around September/October time.
Granu;ar fertiliser applications can be supplemented every 2-3 weeks with rapid acting liquid treatments, for immediate results.
Applying a slow-release lawn fertiliser in spring helps your grass recover from the cold, winter months, whereas applying lawn fertiliser in autumn helps strengthen it before the cold, winter months. This helps keep your lawn healthy throughout the summer and prepare it for winter.
What type of fertiliser should I use?
The time of year will determine the best lawn fertiliser to use.
In spring time we recommend a slow-release lawn fertiliser with a higher nitrogen content to help promote leaf and shoot growth, like the KissMyGrass Spring & Summer lawn fertiliser. This gives your lawn all the nutrients it needs for healthy growth and to look great.
In autumn, we recommend choosing a lawn fertiliser that has been formulated to provide the right nutrients to protect your lawn throughout the colder months. The KissMyGrass Autumn & Winter lawn fertiliser has iron and magnesium to help protect your lawn against diseases.
At Boston Seeds, we stock the KissMyGrass lawn transformation kits that give you everything you need to get your lawn looking its best whatever the season. We have spring, summer, and autumn lawn transformation kits. As well as the KissMyGrass Winter lawn protection kit for the colder months.
How much fertiliser should I use?
How much lawn fertiliser you need to use will depend on the specific product you are using. Always check the product label for the recommended application rate.
Some of our tips for fertiliser include:
- Apply granular fertilisers every 6-8 weeks and liquid fertilisers every 2-3 weeks.
- Apply fertiliser evenly to avoid uneven growth or burning over fertilised areas.
- A soil test can help determine the nutrients your lawn lacks and therefore will need through fertiliser application.
- Allow the fertiliser to settle before using your lawn.
How long does it take for lawn fertiliser to work?
You should begin to see noticeable changes in your lawn after around 1-2 weeks after application of granular fertiliser, however, it will take around 6-8 weeks to see the full benefits, such as colour, density and growth. Liquid fertilisers will deliver results in as little as 24 hours!
How long after fertiliser can you go on a lawn?
At Boston Seeds, we recommend waiting at least 24-48 hours before using your lawn after applying lawn fertiliser. By avoiding your lawn it allows the fertiliser to settle and water in.
